A Coinbase CSV can fail because the wrong report was downloaded, a spreadsheet changed its structure, or the importing service expects different columns. Start again from an untouched Coinbase export before altering data.
First, choose the correct Coinbase file
| File | Typical use | Common mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Raw transaction history | Detailed data review or supported imports | Importer expects another Coinbase template |
| Custom CSV statement | Filtered account activity | Dates, asset, or type filters omit rows |
| Gain/loss report | Reviewing Coinbase-calculated gains and losses | Used where raw activity is required |
| PDF or HTML statement | Readable record | Renamed or converted to CSV |
Coinbase directs customers to Coinbase Taxes and Documents for tax reports and raw transaction history. Its Statements tools also offer CSV, PDF, and HTML with filters. See the complete Coinbase transaction-history steps before troubleshooting.
How to open a Coinbase CSV without changing it
- Duplicate the original download and work on the copy.
- In Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet, use its import-data function rather than double-clicking when regional settings are uncertain.
- Select UTF-8 when encoding is requested.
- Select comma as the delimiter and verify the preview shows separate columns.
- Import transaction IDs and other long identifiers as text.
- Check dates, negative values, decimal points, and sample rows before saving.
If everything appears in one column, the delimiter was not detected. If amounts look 100 or 1,000 times too large, the spreadsheet may be interpreting decimal and thousands separators according to a different locale.
Fixing a failed tax-software import
Upload the untouched original
Many importers validate exact headers and column order. A file resaved by spreadsheet software may use different quoting, encoding, dates, or delimiters.
Confirm the supported Coinbase source
Coinbase retail, former Coinbase Pro, and Coinbase Wallet records are not interchangeable. Coinbase says Coinbase Taxes reports do not include Wallet or Coinbase Pro activity; old Coinbase Pro statements remain separately available for a limited period.
Match the requested report
If the importer requests raw transaction history, do not upload a gain/loss report or renamed PDF. Review the provider’s current import instructions.
Do not force a file by deleting columns
Deleting headers or unfamiliar rows can produce a successful upload with incorrect totals. Use an importer-provided mapping tool only when it clearly documents the expected fields.
If transactions are missing
- Generate an unfiltered export covering the full date range.
- Confirm the correct Coinbase account and product.
- Collect separate Wallet, former Coinbase Pro, or outside-exchange records where applicable.
- Enable pop-ups if Coinbase’s tax-document download does not start.
- Compare the first and last dates with the on-screen account history.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Coinbase CSV open in one column?
Your spreadsheet did not recognize the comma delimiter. Import the file as text/CSV and choose comma explicitly.
Why does tax software reject an edited CSV?
Editing can change required headers, encoding, delimiters, quoting, identifiers, or date formats. Try the untouched original.
Does Coinbase CSV include Coinbase Wallet?
Do not assume it does. Coinbase states that Coinbase Taxes reports exclude Wallet and former Coinbase Pro activity.
Can I convert a Coinbase PDF to CSV?
Conversion may lose or misread fields. Download the official CSV or raw history instead whenever it is available.
